Method 1: The Corner-Grab

This is the trusted routine most of us use already. Let’s go over it again, so you can really master the hand placement.

Step 1: Turn it Inside Out

Start by turning your duvet cover inside out. Lay it flat on your mattress with the open end (the buttons or zip) facing the foot of your bed.

Step 2: Reach for the Top Corners

Reach your arms inside the upside-down cover and grab the top two inner corners, one in each hand. Just like wearing oven mitts!

Step 3: Pinch the Duvet

Through the cover, reach in and grip the top two corresponding corners of your duvet insert. Hold on tight to both the cover and duvet corners together.

Step 4: Shake

Flip the duvet cover down over the duvet insert while holding onto those top corners. Give it a couple of firm shakes. The cover will glide naturally right side out and envelop the duvet.

Step 5: Smooth and Fasten

Lay the duvet down, tuck the bottom corners in place, and button or zip the opening closed. Give it one quick smooth with your hands, and you’re done!

Method 2: The Burrito

This is the method everyone’s been hiding from you. It’s a game-changer, especially for King and Super King beds!

Step 1: Lay the Cover Flat

Turn your duvet cover inside out and lay it flat on your bed. The opening should be at the foot of the bed.

Step 2: Layer your Duvet

Place the duvet insert on top of the cover, aligning all four corners.

Step 3: Roll It Up

Starting at the top headboard end, roll both layers tightly toward the foot of the bed, like a giant burrito!

Step 4: Invert the Opening

Once you reach the bottom, take the open ends of the duvet cover and fold them over the ends of your rolled-up burrito to enclose the roll. Fasten the buttons or zip.

Step 5: Unroll to Reveal

Unroll the burrito back towards the top of the bed. As it unravels, your duvet will emerge encased inside its cover, completely smooth and clump-free. Sheer magic!

How to put a duvet on FAQs

Why does my duvet cover never fit my duvet?

It is probably due to a mismatch in sizing standards or fabric shrinkage. Duvet inserts and covers come in standard sizes (Single, Double, King and Super King), but exact dimensions may vary slightly between manufacturers. Choosing high-quality, pre-shrunk cotton bedding designed to standard specifications helps ensure a tailored fit.

How to make a duvet cover fit properly?

For a crisp finish, take some time to perfectly align the top corners of your duvet with the top inside corners of your cover before shaking or unrolling. Gently fluff your duvet by holding the top corners together once it’s inside, letting gravity settle the fill evenly across the entire cover.

How can I secure my duvet cover so it stays in place?

It really is the worst feeling when your duvet clumps at the bottom of the cover. Look for duvet covers with built-in interior corner ties. Tie these around the corners of your duvet insert before buttoning up. If your insert doesn’t have loops, you can use subtle silicone duvet clips or quick fabric ties at the inside corners to lock everything in place all night long.
