How to care for your scented candle

1 min read

Breathing in the aroma that fills the room when you light a scented candle is one of life’s little luxuries. We've put together a few tips to help you get the most from your new candle and ensure it gives you a long-lasting, clean burn...

Hampton and Astley Pomegranate and Wildflower Scented Candle

No draughts
When you choose a place to put your candle, try to avoid any draughty spots as air currents can disturb the flame and cause it to give off wisps of smoke and soot. You'll know it's burning properly when it has a steady, tear-drop shaped flame that doesn't smoke or flicker.

Let it burn
The very first time you light your candle, you should ideally keep it burning until the pool of melted wax reaches the edges of the jar before you snuff out the flame (around 1-2 hours). This will stop it from ‘tunnelling’, which is when a candle burns down the centre leaving unmelted wax around the sides. You should only need to do this for the first burn.

Keep it trim
Keep your candle's wick well-trimmed, as if it gets too long it may start to soot. Once it's cooled, use a wick-cutter or a small pair of scissors to trim it back to a quarter of an inch.

Clean it up
Keep the pool of hot wax in the middle of the candle clear of any bits of wick or dead matches, as these can give off smoke.

Ventilate
Make sure there's enough ventilation in your room and don't have too many candles lit at once in a small, enclosed space.

Time it
We recommend you don’t keep your candle lit for more than around 4 hours at a time. A good quality candle with a strong fragrance throw will fill your room with aroma in much less time than this, so you can carry on enjoying the scent long after it’s been extinguished.

Now you are all ready to sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful scented candle... ahh!
